A computer is an electronic device that works under instructions given by the user to accept, process and output information as required. A computer has two types of devices which help the user to enter data into the computer and allows the computer to display result of the processed data as required by the user.

An input device is a piece of computer hardware equipment used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as a computer or information appliance These are devices which allow the user to enter data into the computer. For example The mouse, keyboard, The MouseMouse is the most popular pointing device. It is a very famous cursor-control device having a small palm size box with a round ball at its base, which senses the movement of the mouse and sends corresponding signals to the CPU when the mouse buttons are pressed.

Generally, it has two buttons called the left and the right button and a wheel is present between the buttons. A mouse can be used to control the position of the cursor on the screen, but it cannot be used to enter text into the computer.

It is used to select a displayed menu item or draw pictures on the monitor screen. It consists of a photocell and an optical system placed in a small tube.

It is used when some information is available on paper and it is to be transferred to the hard disk of the computer for further manipulation. These images can be edited before they are printed. Digitizer can convert a signal from the television or camera into a series of numbers that could be stored in a computer. They can be used by the computer to create a picture of whatever the camera had been pointed at. Bar coded data is generally used in labeling goods, numbering the books, etc.

It may be a handheld scanner or may be embedded in a stationary scanner. It is used where one out of a few alternatives is to be selected and marked.

Paul's passion for technology and digital media goes back over 30 years. Born in the UK, he now lives in the US. Read on for 10 examples and the definition of an "output device. An output device is a piece of computer hardware that receives data from a computer and then translates that data into another form. That form may be audio, visual, textual, or hard copy such as a printed document. The key distinction between an input device and an output device is that an input device sends data to the computer, whereas an output device receives data from the computer.

Computer - Input Devices

The devices are usually used for display, projection, or for physical reproduction. Monitors and printers are two of the most commonly-known output devices used with a computer. A computer can still function without an output device.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. Forgot Pasword? Aliquam pulvinar eleentum vestibulum.

Output device

Keyboard is the most common and very popular input device which helps to input data to the computer. The layout of the keyboard is like that of traditional typewriter, although there are some additional keys provided for performing additional functions. These keys include the letter keys A-Z and digit keys 09 which generally give the same layout as that of typewriters. It is used to enter the numeric data or cursor movement. Generally, it consists of a set of 17 keys that are laid out in the same configuration used by most adding machines and calculators.

An output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment which converts information into human read able form. It can be text , graphics , tactile , audio , and video. A new type of Output device is being developed these days, known as Speech synthesizer , [2] a mechanism attached to the computer which produces verbal output sounding almost like human speeches. A display device is the most common form of output device. It presents output visually on computer screen.

An input device sends information to a computer system for processing , and an output device reproduces or displays the results of that processing. Input devices only allow for input of data to a computer and output devices only receive the output of data from another device. Most devices are only input devices or output devices, as they can only accept data input from a user or output data generated by a computer. For example, as shown in the top half of the image, a keyboard sends electrical signals, which are received as input. Those signals are then interpreted by the computer and displayed, or output , on the monitor as text or images. In the lower half of the image, the computer sends, or outputs , data to a printer. Then, that data is printed onto a piece of paper, which is also considered output.

Input devices

Such devices make up the peripheral equipment of modern digital computer systems. Peripherals are commonly divided into three kinds: input devices, output devices, and storage devices which partake of the characteristics of the first two. An input device converts incoming data and instructions into a pattern of electrical signals in binary code that are comprehensible to a digital computer. An output device reverses the process, translating the digitized signals into a form intelligible to the user. At one time punched-card and paper-tape readers were extensively used for inputting, but these have now been supplanted by more efficient devices.

Computer input and output devices

Hardware refers to the physical, tangible computer equipment and devices, which provide support for major functions such as input, processing internal storage, computation and control , output, secondary storage for data and programs , and communication.
