Overview of Electrolytes

Well over half of the body's weight is made up of water. Doctors think about the body's water as being restricted to various spaces, called fluid compartments. The three main compartments are. Some minerals —especially the macrominerals minerals the body needs in relatively large amounts —are important as electrolytes. Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge when they are dissolved in a liquid such as blood. The blood electrolytes—sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate—help regulate nerve and muscle function and maintain acid-base balance and water balance. Electrolytes, particularly sodium , help the body maintain normal fluid levels in the fluid compartments because the amount of fluid a compartment contains depends on the amount concentration of electrolytes in it.

The ECF is further subdivided into intravascular plasma water and extravascular interstitial spaces in a ratio of Fluid movement between the intravascular and interstitial spaces occurs across the capillary wall and is determined by Starling forces, i. The transcapillary hydraulic pressure gradient exceeds the corresponding oncotic pressure gradient, thereby favoring the movement of plasma ultrafiltrate into the extravascular space. The return of fluid into the intravascular compartment occurs via lymphatic flow. Notably, the extracellular and intracellular solute compositions differ considerably owing to the activity of various transporters, channels, and ATP-driven membrane pumps.

Marek H. Describe the body water compartments in the adult and the composition of the main body fluids. Explain the role of albumin in the movement of water between plasma and interstitial space, including the consequences of proteinuria. Describe how sodium influences the movement of water between the extracellular and intracellular space. Describe factors affecting plasma potassium concentration.
