When a product enters the market, often unbeknownst to the consumer, it has a life cycle that carries it from being new and useful to eventually being retired out of circulation in the market. This process happens continually - taking products from their beginning introduction stages all the way through their decline and eventual retirement. But, how does the product life cycle actually work, and how can analyzing it help companies? The product life cycle is the process a product goes through from when it is first introduced into the market until it declines or is removed from the market. The life cycle has four stages - introduction, growth, maturity and decline.

All products and services have a certain life span which is measured by the chronological history of sales from the launch of the product until its withdrawal from the market. For the development of effective marketing strategies , an understanding of the different characteristics of the product life cycle stages is absolutely crucial. Based on this understanding, marketing implications can be derived. In the following, each PLC stage is explained in detail. After investigating the characteristics of the product life cycle stages, the marketing activities that accompany each stage are explicated.

For the four stages introduction, growth, maturity and decline, we can identify specific product life cycle strategies. These are based on the characteristics of each PLC stage. Which product life cycle strategies should be applied in each stage is crucial to know in order to manage the PLC properly. The introduction stage is the stage in which a new product is first distributed and made available for purchase, after having been developed in the product development stage. Therefore, the introduction stage starts when the product is first launched. But introduction can take a lot of time, and sales growth tends to be rather slow.

Product passes through four stages of its life cycle. Every stage poses different opportunities and challenges to the marketer. Each of stages demands the unique or distinguished set of marketing strategies. A marketer should watch on its sales and market situations to identify the stage in which the product is passing through, and accordingly, he should design appropriate marketing strategies. Here, strategy basically involves four elements — product, price, promotion, and distribution. By appropriate combination of these four elements, the strategy can be formulated for each stage of the PLC. Every stage gives varying importance to these elements of marketing mix.
