Investment Casting VS Sand Casting

In investment casting , a wax or suitable polymer pattern is coated by dipping into the refractory material slurry. Once the refractory material coating is hardened then this dipping process is repeated several times to increase the coating thickness and its strength. Once the final coating is hardened the wax is melted out and molten metal is poured into the cavity created by the wax pattern. Once the metal solidifies within the mould, metal casting is removed by breaking the refractory mould. Read Investment casting in 8 steps. Investment casting known as the lost wax casting is a precision casting process as it is capable of making high accuracy and intricately detailed castings compared to similar manufacturing processes such as sand casting.

Sales Contacts. By: Dave Olsen. Sand castings can be readily produced in nearly any ferrous or non-ferrous alloy. Some other casting processes will melt and pour super-alloys in a vacuum, but that is not typically done as a sand casting. The relatively low cost of tooling makes sand casting a process of choice for lower volume needs. Patterns do wear so the material selected for the pattern typically wood, plastic, or metal will depend on the expected usage quantity of the part being produced. Through the use of cores , internal structures can be cast in place.

Different Types of Casting Processes Used in Manufacturing

Casting is a process in which the liquid molten metal is poured into the casting cavity whose shape is same as that of the shape of the casting to be produced, allowing to solidify and after solidification, the casting will be taken out by breaking the mould called as Casting Process. There are various types of Casting Processes but out of which, I will be explaining only four types of casting processes in detail. They are. Sand Casting is a process in which the liquid molten metal is poured into the casting cavity whose shape is the same as that of the shape of the casting to be produced, allowed to solidify and after solidification, the casting part will be taken out by breaking the mold called as Sand Casting Process. With the help of sand casting process, cylinder blocks, machine tool beds, pistons, etc. Die Casting is a metal casting process which is characterized by forcing the molten metal into a mold cavity under high pressure or under gravity.

Excellent surface finish. Tight dimensional tolerances. Complex and intricate shapes may be produced. Capability to cast thin walls. Wide variety of metals and alloys (ferrous and non-ferrous) may be cast. Draft is not required in the molds design. Low material waste.

6 Advantages of Investment Castings

Not all castings are the same. Investment casting and sand casting are two different metal casting methods. Both investment casting and sand casting have their own advantages.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Casting

As you know, die casting is a metal manufacturing process in which molten metal is forced under high pressure into mold tooling cavities. And easily to obtain the desired metal shape, nowadays, it is a widely used in automotive, lighting, industrial, and households. As well the comparison of other manufacturing process. Little or no machining is required and thousands of identical castings can be produced before additional tooling is required. They are also heat resistant. Thin wall castings are stronger and lighter than those possible with other casting methods. Plus, because die castings do not consist of separate parts welded or fastened together, the strength is that of the alloy rather than the joining process.

Advantages 1. High speed production can be achieved as the whole process is completely automated. Possible to obtain fairly complex castings than that feasible by gravity die casting due to the use of the movable cores. Very small thicknesses can be easily filled as the liquid metal is injected under high pressure.

Disadvantages of Investment casting · Compared to other methods of metal casting, investment casting involves many complex steps making the process relatively.
