When a message arrives informing him that his wife, Fulvia, is dead and that Pompey is raising an army to rebel against the triumvirate, Antony decides to return to Rome. Upon his arrival, he and Caesar quarrel, while Lepidus ineffectually tries to make peace. However, when a messenger delivers word that Octavia is plain and unimpressive, Cleopatra becomes confident that she will win Antony back. The triumvirs meet Pompey and settle their differences without going to battle. Pompey agrees to keep peace in exchange for rule over Sicily and Sardinia. That evening, the four men drink to celebrate their truce.

O, that I knew this husband, which, you say, must charge his horns with garlands! Soothsayer Your will? Is't you, sir, that know things? Soothsayer In nature's infinite book of secrecy A little I can read. LEPIDUS I must not think there are Evils enow to darken all his goodness: His faults in him seem as the spots of heaven, More fiery by night's blackness; hereditary, Rather than purchased; what he cannot change, Than what he chooses. Let us grant, it is not Amiss to tumble on the bed of Ptolemy; To give a kingdom for a mirth; to sit And keep the turn of tippling with a slave; To reel the streets at noon, and stand the buffet With knaves that smell of sweat: say this becomes him,-- As his composure must be rare indeed Whom these things cannot blemish,--yet must Antony No way excuse his soils, when we do bear So great weight in his lightness.

This act serves to introduce the main characters — Antony, Cleopatra, and Octavius Caesar; it also outlines the main forces which motivate each of them. The first scene is set in Alexandria, where two of Antony's men, Demetrius and Philo, describe the lovers' relationship. Caesar appears in a later scene, and we see how he perceives Antony and Cleopatra's relationship. In addition, his comments about Antony reveal a great deal about his own character. We also have ample evidence in this act that Antony and Cleopatra are deeply in love, but Antony does not realize the tragic possibilities of their infatuation, yet he is torn by divided loyalties. In short, this first act sets out what the relationships are among the main characters, and it establishes the basic conflicts that dominate the rest of the play: first, Antony and Cleopatra and their love for one another; and second, Antony's rivalry with Caesar. In this act, Shakespeare accelerates the inevitable final conflict between his primary characters.

The Mediterranean Dream in Perspe A reading of the general context for the play shows its relevance to the Stuart politics of union Parry , as well as to the broader expectations of the audience. Interestingly, such expectations, as far as entertainment is concerned, are met with the insertion of codes from civic pageantry and court entertainment within the dramatic texture of the play—offering thus a variety of perspectives, in particular on the subject of the Mediterranean world. The theme of a Mediterranean dream appears both within the characters and in the wealth of the poetic imagery. There is an ambiguity in the use of the adjective Mediterranean, a term which will be used in the following lines in a restricted sense, with such connotations as exotic, foreign, and ornamental entertainment, and not as the sea itself. As to the word dream, its sense is also restricted here to imagination, and particularly visual imagination Sabatier The question whether authors such as Plutarch were considered English rather than foreign, since they were directly applied to Elizabethan and Jacobean England, is an open one, acculturation being one of the main features of the period, as contemporary translations into the vernacular amply document.

Antony is captivated by Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. Gossip and scandal leads to plots of murder and battles. While in Alexandria however, the ageing Antony has become captivated by Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt and mother to Julius Caesar's illegitimate son, Caesarion. The gossip and scandal this is creating both amongst Romans in Alexandria and at home in Rome gives rise to dissention between Octavius and Antony, whose behaviour is felt to be debauched and 'un-Roman'. At the same time as the power of the triumvirate is being challenged by a dissatisfied senator, Pompey, Antony hears news from Rome that his wife, Fulvia, is dead.

NOTES ON SHAKESPEARE'S ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA
