General relativity

General relativity , also known as the general theory of relativity , is the geometric theory of gravitation published by Albert Einstein in and is the current description of gravitation in modern physics. General relativity generalizes special relativity and refines Newton's law of universal gravitation , providing a unified description of gravity as a geometric property of space and time or four-dimensional spacetime. In particular, the curvature of spacetime is directly related to the energy and momentum of whatever matter and radiation are present. The relation is specified by the Einstein field equations , a system of partial differential equations. Some predictions of general relativity differ significantly from those of classical physics , especially concerning the passage of time, the geometry of space, the motion of bodies in free fall , and the propagation of light.

Book Details

An essential resource for learning about general relativity and much more, from four leading experts. Important and useful to every student of relativity, this book is a unique collection of some problems--with solutions--in the fields of special and general relativity, gravitation, relativistic astrophysics, and cosmology. The problems are expressed in broad physical terms to enhance their pertinence to readers with diverse backgrounds. In their solutions, the authors have attempted to convey a mode of approach to these kinds of problems, revealing procedures that can reduce the labor of calculations while avoiding the pitfall of too much or too powerful formalism. Although well suited for individual use, the volume may also be used with one of the modem textbooks in general relativity.

The topic of this course is the classical relativistic theory of gravity, General Relativity. This is a geometric theory: the key idea is that gravity is a manifestation of the curvature of space-time. We will then discuss the field equations of general relativity, and explore the physical properties of interesting simple solutions, describing black holes, cosmology, and gravitational waves. Suggestions for the web page are also welcome. There are many good books, a selection of which are listed below. There are also many texts available on-line see below ; you may find it useful to look at relevant chapters of the lecture notes by Carroll. Be aware that different authors use different conventions; in this course, the conventions are as follows.

If you are using a Unix machine, Postscript will probably open faster and look better on the screen, otherwise, you should click on the pdf version. Problem Sheet 1 : pdf , ps and solutions pdf , ps , short pdf and short ps. Also source as a tar file. Tensors, covariant derivative.

The homework problem sets are not optional. You are encouraged to discuss the class material and homework problems with your classmates and to work in groups, but all submitted problems should represent your own work and understanding. The final exam will be held in Nat. Annex and will cover the complete course material.

In commemoration of the th anniversary of general relativity, many others would look back on its history and achievements, so I will write mine focusing on the problems of general relativity and their solutions. Pieces of writing hereunder are the rearrangement of my past idea from thesis [1] and postings on my personal blog [2] and science community by focusing on the theme of problems and solutions of general relativity.

The general theory of relativity is a theory of manifolds equipped with Lorentz metrics and fields which describe the matter content. In addition, there are equations describing the evolution of the matter. This book first provides a definition of the concept of initial data and a proof of the correspondence between initial data and development. It turns out that some initial data allow non-isometric maximal developments, complicating the uniqueness issue.
