The cranial nerves are a set of twelve nerves that originate in the brain. Each has a different function for sense or movement. Each nerve has a name that reflects its function and a number according to its location in the brain.

How to Assess the Cranial Nerves

Diffusion imaging tractography has allowed the in vivo description of brain white matter. One of its applications is preoperative planning for brain tumor resection. Due to a limited spatial and angular resolution, it is difficult for fiber tracking to delineate fiber crossing areas and small-scale structures, in particular brainstem tracts and cranial nerves. New methods are being developed but these involve extensive multistep tractography pipelines including the patient-specific design of multiple regions of interest ROIs. The authors propose a new practical full tractography method that could be implemented in routine presurgical planning for skull base surgery.

Cranial nerve

The cranial nerves are 12 pairs of nerves that can be seen on the ventral bottom surface of the brain. Some of these nerves bring information from the sense organs to the brain; other cranial nerves control muscles; other cranial nerves are connected to glands or internal organs such as the heart and lungs. Can't remember the names of the cranial nerves? The bold letters stand for: olfactory, optic, oculomotor, trochlear, trigeminal, abducens, facial, vestibulocochlear, glossopharyngeal, vagus, spinal accessory, hypoglossal. Still can't remember the cranial nerves? Perhaps you need some Cranial Nerve Bookmarks to help you study! After you print the bookmarks, cut them into three individual bookmarks and use them to mark your place when you study.

Smell, a function of the 1st olfactory cranial nerve, is usually evaluated only after head trauma or when lesions of the anterior fossa eg, meningioma are suspected or patients report abnormal smell or taste. The patient is asked to identify odors eg, soap, coffee, cloves presented to each nostril while the other nostril is occluded. Alcohol, ammonia, and other irritants, which test the nociceptive receptors of the 5th trigeminal cranial nerve, are used only when malingering is suspected. For the 2nd optic cranial nerve, visual acuity is tested using a Snellen chart for distance vision or a handheld chart for near vision; each eye is assessed individually, with the other eye covered. Color perception is tested using standard pseudoisochromatic Ishihara or Hardy-Rand-Ritter plates that have numbers or figures embedded in a field of specifically colored dots. Visual fields are tested by directed confrontation in all 4 visual quadrants.

Table of cranial nerves

Your cranial nerves are pairs of nerves that connect your brain to different parts of your head, neck, and trunk. There are 12 of them, each named for their function or structure. This is based off their location from front to back. Their functions are usually categorized as being either sensory or motor.

V 1 ophthalmic nerve is located in the superior orbital fissure V 2 maxillary nerve is located in the foramen rotundum. V 3 mandibular nerve is located in the foramen ovale. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Cranial nerve , in vertebrates, any of the paired nerves of the peripheral nervous system that connect the muscles and sense organs of the head and thoracic region directly to the brain. Lower vertebrates fishes, amphibians have 10 pairs. A 13th pair, a plexus branching network known as the terminal nerve CN 0 , is sometimes also recognized in humans, though whether it is a vestigial structure or a functioning nerve is unclear.

Summary of the Cranial Nerves

The names of the cranial nerves relate to their function and they are also numerically identified in roman numerals I-XII. There are twelve cranial nerves in total. They are the only cranial nerves to pass through canals. See table 1 for a summary of the cranial nerves, their modalities and functions.
